Bioseal is the patented chemical component driving Safe-to-Touch
Bioseal is the only patented and chemically proven antimicrobial technology able to provide 99.999% protection against the harmful pathogens that are known to contaminate paper-based printed products.
The Bioseal food-safe chemical component is scientifically proven to prevent the colonisation and growth of all known bacteria, virus and mould particles including MRSA, Salmonella, E coli and Campylobacter.
These are all life threatening, but preventable.
Each pathogen is transmitted via person-to-person interaction following contact with contaminated materials.
Bioseal is added at the time of manufacture to commercial print finish solutions. Distributed and sold under the Safe-to-Touch (StT) brand, Bioseal provides a potentially lifesaving layer of protection to finished printed items.
Safe-to-Touch is fast becoming the industry standard antimicrobial. StT is already being used by the leading global manufacturers of print production finish solutions. They are all looking to extend the addition of its potentially lifesaving properties across their product ranges. With uniform protection available to retailers and brands irrespective of paper stock or application, consumers have the assurance that there is no risk of contracting a serious illness or infection as the direct result of handling a StT protected packet, product, book or piece of literature.
Safe-to-Touch has a potentially huge role to play in maintaining good public health. StT's application is already being tested in non-paper materials and it is already being used in the production of clinical gloves.
Our bespoke chemical formula paralyses pathogens, making it impossible for them to colonise or grow
Our bespoke chemical formula paralyses pathogens, making it impossible for them to colonise or grow
The base component of Safe-to-Touch has been developed specifically for purpose in our Nottingham lab to address concerns relating to the growth in the spread of serious illnesses via person-to-person following contact with printed products including food packaging.
The interaction between the coating and active substrate is critical and unique to StT.
The surfactants with the Safe-to-Touch formulation create micro-emulsion colloids. When combined with the active ingredients these balance out polarity and provide a cationic phase operating within the hydrophilic level and an oil / phenolic phase within the hydrophobic stage.
The significance of this is that the pathogens are rendered inactive.
The component chemicals in StT have been identified for their antimicrobial activity and how they dynamically interact between the active ingredients and the sealants, inks, coatings and varnishes.
In addition to conventional antimicrobial agents, we have selected components that will break down the protein structure and lipid layer of the outer shell of micro-organisms. This is also a unique feature for a permanent structure, in this instance print surfaces.
Different formulations have been researched and developed to provide compatibility with all print coatings including water, oil and UV based products.
All regulatory compliance, stability and licence considerations had to be made alongside the chemical research that were all part of the R&D process.

StT has been independently tested at UKAS approved labs and undergone studies using the latest techniques at the Medical Research Department at Nottingham University.
In addition we have swabbed many paper surfaces with a 3M Clean-Trace ATP hygiene monitoring system which assesses standards of hygiene and cleaning procedures by measuring the amount of adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP) in a sample.
StT is proven to control microbial growth in many practical situation and has successfully inhibited or prevented growth of microorganisms in all scenarios.
We will continue to test StT in our laboratory against bacterial, fungi and viruses. We have successfully tested against a number of organisms and these include:
Campylobacter coli, Campylobacter, MRSA, Ecoli, Enterobacter cloacae, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Lactobacillus casei, Listeria monocytogenes, Pseudomonos aeruginosa, Salmonella, Salmonella enteritidis, Staphylococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Streptococcus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus salivarius, Streptococcus sanguis and Streptococcus sobrinus
We know StT starts to work against pathogens immediately, however, in a study conducted at Nottingham University it showed a 100% kill rate in under 4 minutes against MRSA and Pseudomonos aeruginosa.

Safe-to-Touch is food standard safe, following the strictest guidelines for the control of chemical material regulations and migration. All the component ingredients in StT conform to PD and BPR.
The commercial variations of Safe-to-Touch have each been independently tested and approved for direct and indirect contact with food.
This approval is registered for use in the manufacturing process and in its finished form coating the paper.
Safe-to-Touch has been tested in clinical, production and print environments. It complies with all regulatory standards and is registered 'food safe' by Campden BRI

The British Coatings Federation is the representative body for the UK’s £2.8 billion-a-year paint, printing ink, powder coating and wallcovering manufacturing industries. The majority of regulations that are coming our way are driven from the EU Commission and Parliament. Through CEPE and UK Government Departments, we are able to influence legislation so that it not only meets the wishes of the market place but also ensures that is is both practical and achievable.
With more than 51,000 members and an international publishing and knowledge business we are the UK’s professional body for chemical scientists, supporting and representing our members and bringing together chemical scientists from all over the world.
A not-for-profit organisation with a heritage that spans 170 years, we have an ambitious international vision for the future. Around the world, we invest in educating future generations of scientists. We raise and maintain standards. We partner with industry and academia, promoting collaboration and innovation. We advise governments on policy. And we promote the talent, information and ideas that lead to great advances in science.
We’re working to shape the future of the chemical sciences – for the benefit of science and humanity.
The BPIF is the principal business support organisation representing the UK print, printed packaging and graphic communication industry.
They provide the highest standard of support for printers to grow and develop healthy, sustainable and profitable businesses, aiming to provide an environment geared towards their businesses success. The BPIF offer practical, value-adding solutions for all areas of a print organisation, ranging from Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality issues; with the implementation of HR requirements; provide resolutions of technical or legal issues; as well as advice and support on marketing, sales and finance.
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is the driving force among regulatory authorities in implementing the EU's groundbreaking chemicals legislation for the benefit of human health and the environment as well as for innovation and competitiveness. ECHA helps companies to comply with the legislation, advances the safe use of chemicals, provides information on chemicals and addresses chemicals of concern.
